Peter Stas, a former banker, and his wife Aletta founded Frédérique Constant in Geneva in 1988 with the ambition of bringing genuine Swiss mechanical watchmaking to a wider audience than the traditional maisons served. Rather than positioning the brand as a fashion label with a Swiss name attached, the couple invested early in an in-house workshop capable of developing proprietary movements. That decision has defined the company ever since: it is now regarded as a legitimate manufacture, engineering and finishing its own calibres in Geneva, a capability that took most Swiss brands of comparable size decades longer to build, if they built it at all.
